May 15 is National Hispanic Hepatitis Awareness Day (NHHAD), a chance to bring attention to the impact of viral hepatitis in the Hispanic/Latinx communities in the U.S.
In 2018, Hispanic/Latinx individuals had the third highest Hepatitis C death rate among all racial/ethnic groups, at 4.64 deaths per 100,000 population.
Despite having lower Hepatitis C prevalence than non-Hispanic white people, Hispanic/Latinx individuals were 1.4x more likely to die from Hepatitis C than non-Hispanic white people in 2018.
In 2023, Hispanic/Latinx individuals made up the largest proportion of the immigrant population with chronic Hepatitis B. Yet these communities still have lower rates of follow up testing and linkage to specialty care than other communities, specifically the Asian population. Lower awareness of Hepatitis B risk could account for these lower rates.
Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) can treat Hepatitis C infections. However, Hispanic/Latinx people face disparities in DAA access. In 2023, Arizona Hispanic/Latinx patients were less likely to be treated for Hepatitis C compared to White patients. Additionally, compared to non-Hispanic children, Hispanic children with Hepatitis C infections had 72% lower odds of receiving DAAs for Hepatitis C treatment in 2023.
On NHHAD, it’s our responsibility to learn about the overlooked health disparities that Hispanic/Latinx individuals face when seeking viral hepatitis care and treatment.
