National Hispanic Hepatitis Awareness Day 2025 Toolkit

May 14, 2025

National Hispanic Hepatitis Awareness Day is observed annually on May 15 to spotlight the impact of viral hepatitis on Hispanic/Latinx/Latine communities in the United States.  Because chronic Hepatitis B prevalence is highest in foreign-born Asian and African individuals in the U.S., Hispanic/Latinx/Latine individuals, who comprise the largest proportion of the U.S. immigrant population, are a less recognized risk group. This may indicate that awareness of HBV and its risk factors may be lower among foreign-born Hispanic persons and the providers who serve them, resulting in delays in diagnosis and treatment.” Established in 2012 by the Latino Commission on AIDS and the Hispanic Federation, National Hispanic Hepatitis Awareness Day aims to:

  • Increase awareness about Hepatitis A, B, and C among Hispanic/Latinx/Latine communities.
  • Promote testing, vaccination, and treatment among Hispanic/Latinx/Latine communities.
  • Address health disparities affecting Hispanic/Latinx/Latine populations.
  • Mobilize community and government efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis.

In CDC’s most recent viral hepatitis surveillance report, Hispanic persons had higher rates of death related to Hepatitis C (2.62 per 100,000) compared to Whites (2.4 per 100,000) and Asian Pacific Islanders (1.04 per 100,000), highlighting the ongoing need for targeted prevention and treatment efforts within this community.

On National Hispanic Hepatitis Awareness Day, it’s our responsibility to recognize the overlooked health disparities that Hispanic/Latinx/Latine individuals face when seeking viral hepatitis care and treatment.
